Nourishing Families
Two jobs? Three jobs? More? How many does it take for a working family to be able to pay all of the bills and put dinner on the table? You might be surprised. At Second Harvest we see families where both parents work more than one job, but after “fixed” expenses such as rent and utilities have been paid, there is often not enough left over to pay for food. And if an unexpected bill comes along such as a medical expense or repair bill, then everything is up in the air.

That’s why we’re here to help.
More than half of all households served by Second Harvest Community Food Bank have one or more adults working. For many of those households, income from employment is often not sufficient enough to make ends meet. The average household income among our families is $18,310.
Another challenge facing the area is rural hunger. Many of the rural counties served by Second Harvest have poverty rates well above 14 percent.
Simply put, families who are struggling are finding it even more difficult to purchase food at a grocery store.
Second Harvest reaches many of these food insecure families through our network of over 100 Partner Agencies in Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas. These Partner Agencies include food pantries, food kitchens, feeding centers, senior centers and daycare centers.
