Building Hunger-Free Communities Annual Fund Drive Underway

Second Harvest Community Food Bank officially kicked off the 2014 Building Hunger-Free Communities Annual Fund Drive in Leavenworth County.

The purpose of this fund campaign is to raise $400,000 for Second Harvest’s four primary initiatives: Nourishing Children, Nourishing Seniors, Nourishing Families and Nourishing Neighborhoods. These initiatives contain Second Harvest’s direct service programs and its network of 100 Partner Agencies.

“For the next three months, Second Harvest has set a goal to raise $400,000 to fund our direct service programs. We are focusing on four areas to help nourish the more than 17,000 children in our region who struggle with food insecurity and hunger, to provide meals to seniors who often have to choose between buying food or medicine and easing the burden of families who are working hard and still are not able to make ends meet,” said Chad Higdon, executive director at Second Harvest.

There are many ways to help build hunger-free communities:

  • Donate Money. Individuals or businesses can make a monetary gift to the campaign at www.OurCommunityFoodBank.org/BHFC. Even the smallest gift of $5 can help provide 15 meals. Through the months of March and April, Second Harvest is taking part in the Feinstein Annual $1 Million Giveaway, meaning donations can go even further. For every $1 donated, Second Harvest is eligible for a $1 match.   
  • Volunteer. Volunteering at Second Harvest or a local Partner Agency is a great way to build hunger-free communities. Volunteers are critical to our vision and do everything from working in Fresh Start, to representing Second Harvest at special events.   • Host a food drive. Holding a food drive is a great way to help Second Harvest provide nutritious food to the more than 15,000 people a week that relies on food assistance. Nearly 200,000 pounds of Second Harvest’s food comes from food drives. Registration can be done at www.OurCommunityFoodBank.org/foodfunddrives.  
  • We CAN Build. This event allows teams to build the most creative structures, all from canned goods. An event will take place at East Hills Mall, on Saturday, May 3 at 10:00 a.m., with a regional event taking place during the month of May.
