Second Harvest Receives $20,000 to Help Nourish Children at Risk of Hunger This Summer

No Hunger Summer LogoHunger doesn’t take a vacation, which is why Second Harvest Community Food Bank is expanding No Hunger Summer, our summer feeding program through a grant awarded by the ConAgra Foods Foundation – to address the summer-specific needs of children in the region served by Second Harvest.

The goal of ConAgra Foods’ Hunger-Free Summer initiative with Feeding America is to serve at least 25 percent more children over the course of five years. The program – now in its fourth year – has supported the delivery of more than 2.5 million meals and snacks to children struggling with hunger over the summer.

“No Hunger Summer is our fastest growing program. Since we started in summer 2011, we have grown from serving 2,000 meals to over 20,000 last summer,” said Tamara Grubb, director of operations at Second Harvest. “With our new sites this year, we anticipate serving nearly 40,000 meals in just 8 weeks. The funds from Feeding America, ConAgra and the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program allowed us the flexibility to grow this much needed program. They are covering expenses that we would not have had the resources to cover this summer.”

No Hunger Summer is Second Harvest Community Food Bank's summer feeding program. Café sites provide lunches to children and families five days a week during the summer. The goal of No Hunger Summer is to nourish children when free and reduced lunches are not available. No Hunger Summer, it's food that's in when school is out

No Hunger Summer Truck“We know that one of the barriers to children eating at our locations is transportation. The beauty of our mobile truck is that we can go directly to the neighborhoods with the most need. Thanks to Bethel Foursquare, we have the vehicle and thanks to Feeding America and ConAgra, we have funds to assist in covering the operating expenses of the vehicle,” said Grubb.

The mobile locations are as follows

Missouri:

  • Lake Contrary | Monday, Wednesday and Friday | 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
  • Neely School | Monday, Wednesday and Friday | 11:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
  • Patee Park (9th and Monterey) | Monday, Wednesday and Friday | 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Kansas:

  • Elwood City Park (501 N. 9th) | Tuesday and Thursday | 12:45 p.m. – 1:15 p.m.
  • First Baptist Church of Wathena (407 N. 3rd) | Tuesday and Thursday | 12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m.
