What is a Food Desert?

Like thousands of other people in Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas, Kate’s family lives in a food desert. Food deserts were defined by the USDA in the 2008 Farm Bill as “an area in the United States with limited access to affordable and nutritious food, particularly such an area composed of predominately lower income communities.” In order to gain access to nutritious foods, residents of food deserts have no option but to:

  • Utilize private cars
  • Travel several miles by foot
  • Use public transportation
